This book is an internal publication published by Disneyland for the park's pioneers, giving their reminiscences, for the park's 20th anniversary. It was not available to the public and is the only internal publication you will find in this list. The only reason it appears here is that the magazine Tomart's Disneyana listed it in its bibliography and as this magazine has become the ultimate reference for Disney fans I would get too many questions by not including it.

One more juvenile book.

While exploring the book by Edward Disney, I stumbled on this one. However, while this book is about the Disney family, there is no mention of Walt's family, except a one-page introduction.

Disney Miller, Diane: The Story of Walt Disney published by Holt; 1957 (paperback version by Dell 1959).
This is certainly not an unbiased biography since it was written by Walt's daughter, but it is very refreshing, enjoyable and interesting.

Disneyland Paris, Souvenir Book published by Disneyland Paris; 1996.
A nice soft-cover souvenir book published in at least six different languages.

Disneyland: the First Quarter Century published by Disneyland: 1979.

The only complete catalogue of Disney stamps I am aware of. Ends in 2000, unfortunately. Written in Spanish and English and published in Barcelona.

Dunham, M.L.: Disney's Junior Encyclopedia of Animated Characters published by Disney Press; 2004.
No interest. Too focused on the kids audience.

Dunlop, Beth: Building a Dream, the Art of Disney Architecture published by Hyperion; 1996.
Whereas The Art of Reassurance is about concept art leading to Disney's buildings, Building a Dream is about what has actually been built. Therefore, the visual documents in this book are a little bit less interesting than in the former one.

Dunn, Ann (editor): Brookman Price Guide for Disney Stamps published by Krause Publications; 1999.

Earle, Eyvind: Horizon Bound on a Bicycle - The Autobiography of Eyvind Earle published by Eyvind Earle; 1991.

Edwards, Scott and Stobener, Bob: Cel Magic, Collecting Animation Art published by Laughs Unlimited Inc; 1991.

Eisenstein, Serguei: Walt Disney published by Circé; 1991.
This book in French is an extremely odd reflection on Walt's early work by one of Russian cinema geniuses. The thinking is often odd but not totally uninteresting. This essay has been published in English in "Bruno, Edoardo; Ghezzi, Enrico (editors): Walt Disney published by Biennale di Venezia; 1985".

Eisner, Michael; Swartz, Tony: Work in Progess published by Random House; 1998.
If it weren't for the fact that Michael is shamelessly forgetting dates and events, this might be an interesting book.

Eliot, Mark: Walt Disney, Hollywood's Dark Prince published by Birch Lane Press; 1993.
The latest and by far most stupid and uninteresting "scandalous biography" of Walt. So full of mistakes, guesses, intentional lies and non-intentional ignorances it is hardly worth mentioning.

Felice, Andrea (editor): Setant' Anni di Fiabe Animate published by Editrice Comic Art; 1999.
A nice book in Italian, but the illustrations are a bit disapointing as no really unknown document is reproduced.

Ferraiuolo, Perucci: Disney and the Bible published by Horizon Books; 1996.
An analysis of the current Walt Disney Company that uses the literal interpretation of the Bible as its weapon. What can I say about a book so full of mistakes and bad faith (ironic isn't it) that it auto-destroys itself ?

Finch, Christopher: The Art of Walt Disney published by Harry N. Abrams; 1973, updated in 1995 and in 2004.
The images are wonderful, the text is extremely precise and easy to read. What else could one ask for ? The best part of the story is that it was updated twenty years after the first edition. A condensed version was published in 1975.

Finch, Christopher: Winnie the Pooh - A Celebration of the Silly Old Bear published by Hyperion; June 2000.
This tribute to Winnie contains some lavish artwork coming from the archives.

Finnie, Shaun: The Disneylands that Never Were published by Lulu Books; 2006.
A first foray into a fascinating aspect of Disney history, that would deserve a great art-book or an in-depth exploration by a serious Disney historian. An excellent start, though. Pure text and no images for obvious costs and rights reasons, unfortunately.

Jones, Angie; Oliff, Jamie: Thinking Animation - Bridging the Path Between 2D and CG published by Course Technology PTR; 2006.
A bit technical, but the number of former or current Disney artists contributing to it (Eric Goldberg, Floyd Norman, Tony Bancroft,...) make it worthwhile for readers that are not also animators.

Jones, Tom (introduction by): Walt Disney's Christmas Treasury published by Abbeville Press; 1978.

Kronborg, Steffen: Andre andalyser - En ny andtologi self-published; 1988.
According to Ole Nielsen: "More of the same. Kronborg is good at revealing the deeper levels of Barks' stories and his almost religious belief in Nature's intervention in human matters." Written in Danish.

Kuenz, Jane; Klugman, Karen; Waldrep, Shelton; Willis, Susan: Inside the Mouse published by Duke University Press; 1995.

Notes, drawings and translations compiled by Thatch.

Kurtti, Jeff: Subterranean's Tours Atlantis - A Traveler's Guide to the Lost City published by Hyperion; June 2001.
This irreverent romp gives travelers the information they need to make their journey to Atlantis a vacation to remember.

Kurtti, Jeff: The Art of the Little Mermaid published by Hyperion; 1998.
This book is really not worth the others in the "Art of" series. It does contain a few concept drawings by Kay Nielsen, however, most of the book is made of stills from the film. Moreover, none of the art is credited and this book only exists in a miniature version, even though it was never originally published as a large coffee-table book.

A book about Disney characters that contains quite a few never-seen-before documents and is a nice-to-have for both adults and kids.

Nice animation art is reproduced in this large exhibition catalog.

Lainsbury, Andrew: Once Upon an American Dream - The Story of Euro Disneyland published by University Press of Kansas; January 2000.
Considering the fact that I am currently writting the official art book about Disneyland Paris, you can believe how puzzled I might be by that one.

A nice book about animated cartoons. Nothing revolutionary, however.

Once again, an absolute jewel. One of the best art books ever published on a Disney movie.

Lambert, Pierre: Mickey Mouse published by Démons et Merveilles; 1998.
The author of the best art book ever published on a Disney movie, Pinocchio, has created an other masterpiece. The book is 300 pages long, contains 433 color documents and has an introduction by Roy Disney. There is no limited edition as for the Pinocchio volume, but all copies of the French book are sold in book-cases.Written in French with an English edition published in December by Hyperion that does not contain a bookcase.

Lambert, Pierre: Pinocchio published by Démons et Merveilles; 1995.
This is a book that marked the history of Disney books. It is by far the most lavish, the most glossy, in short the most beautiful ever published about a Disney movie. Granted, the text is short but the artwork is so gorgeous that it does not matter at all. This book was originally published in French. The French edition can be found in two versions: the regular one as well as a limited edition (450 copies, leather-bound binding in a hard slipcase, complete with a beautiful high-quality litho). The English version was published in 1997 by Hyperion. Legendary artists Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston recently gave Charles Solomon an interview about Pierre Lambert's book.

Lambert, Pierre: Walt Disney, l'Age d'Or published by Démons et Merveilles; 2006.
Slim text (in French) but beautiful artwork, as ever. The book covers Disney's animated features from Snow White to The Jungle Book. For really hard-core fans, unfortunately, the number of truely "never-seen-before" documents is slightly disapointing.

Land, Richard D.; York, Frank: Send a Message to Mickey : The ABC's of Making Your Voice Heard at Disney published by Broadman & Holman Publishers; 1998.

Good book about a no-so-good show.

Lowery, Howard (editor): The Malcolm Willits Collection of Mickey Mouse Paintings by Floyd Gottfredson self-published; 1993.
As there is no book reproducing all Gottfredson paintings (like The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck for Barks paintings), this catalog is the closest thing one can find. The art is interesting, some would say beautiful.

This book is the obvious reference for Disney poster collectors.

Mandry, Michel: Disney Channel published by Hachette Editions n°1; 1986.

Mandry, Michel: Happy Birthday Mickey ! published by Editions du Chêne; 1984.
The best history ever published of Le Journal de Mickey by its former editor, the ultimate historian of French Disney comics. For non-French speakers the illustrations still make it worthwhile.

Mandry, Michel: Mickey Explore le Temps published by Hachette-Edi-Monde; 1980.
This beautiful "white book" contains the best episodes of the famous French comics series "Mickey Through the Centuries" drawn for more than 25 years by the fantastic French artist Pierre Nicolas (also author of the famous Paris Match cover drawn for Walt's death). The introduction by Michel Mandry in itself makes buying the book a very worthwhile move. Written in French.

The first book about what the real EPCOT project would have been. A well researched study. A "must have" for real Disney historians.

Marling, Karal Ann (editor): Designing Disney's Theme Parks: the Architecture of Reassurance published by Flammarion and Centre Canadien d'Architecture; 1997.

The long awaited magnum opus of Russell and J.B. about a subject that would have deserved this in-depth study a long time earlier.

Mezzavilla, Silvano: Giorgio Cavazzano published by Editori del Grifo; 1994.
Another small and very interesting book about one of the grand masters of Italian Disney comics.

Mickey Mouse In Color published by Pantheon; 1988.

Volume 1 was excellent, this one is too.

One more juvenile book!

In Italian. The author explores the connections between Uta, Margravess of Meissen, a mediaeval aristocrat, patron of the Cathedral of Naumburg, and Ghrimilde, the evil queen from Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. These connections are inspired to the author by the strong similarity between a statue in the Cathedral of Naumburg and the famous Disney villain during a trip in 1999.

Poncet, Marie Thérèse: Disney published by Anthologie du Cinéma; 1967.
This little booklet was written (in French) as an homage to Walt, just a few months after his death. This biography is rather uninteresting, though.

Poncet, Marie-Thérése: Le Génie de Walt Disney self-published; 1995.
A strange biography that is mostly the result of a meeting of Walt by Mrs. Poncet in the mid-'50s. Only the part about Disney in France in the '50s and '60s is really new. This represents only a very small portion of the book, though.

Pontius, Larry: Waking Walt published by Writer's Showcase Press; 2002.
I do not usually list novels on the Disney Books Network but this one is special and can almost be considered as a reference book. Written by a former Disney executive it depicts a situation where Walt has been resurected to help run the Company as it faces troubles. A "must read".

Preszler, June: Walt Disney published by Bridgstone Books; 2003.
An other addition to the long and boring list of book about Walt for kids.

Price, Harrison "Buzz": Walt's Revolution by the Numbers published by Ripleys; 2004.
The man to whome Walt turned in the '60s for advice on the economics of the creation of Walt Disney World. An important piece to Disney's historical jigsaw puzzle.

Rafferty, Kevin; Gordon, Bruce: Walt Disney Imagineering published by Hyperion; 1996.
The title says it all. The book is huge, the illustrations are perfect and the authors are the best that can be. This is the Bible about the division of Disney that was once called WED and has always been the idea tank of the Company.

Rana, Marga: Disney Dolls - Identification & Value Guide published by Hobby House Pr.; 1999.
Ugly book, for specialized Mattel collectors.

Rawls, Walton: Disney Dons Dogtags published by Abbeville Press; 1992.
Some of the nicest insignias designed by the Studio during W.W.II.

Raz, Aviad E.: Riding the Black Ship: Japan and Tokyo Disneyland published by Harvard Eastern Monographs; 1999.

Rebello, Stephen and Healey, Jane: The Art of Hercules, the Chaos of Creation published by Hyperion; 1997.
The format of this book is different from the one of the three previous ones in the "Art of" series. It is, however, as interesting as the others. Gorgeous illustrations and nice text.

Rebello, Stephen: The Art of The Hunchback of Notre Dame published by Hyperion; 1996.
An other masterpiece in the "Art of" series. As ever the documents reproduced are stunning and the text is rather weak.

Rebello, Stephen: The Art of Pocahontas published by Hyperion; 1995.
This series is excellent as ever.

Reitberger, Reinhold: Walt Disney - In Selbstzeugnissen und Bilddokumenten published by Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag; 1979.
According to Frank Fabian: "Part of the Rowohlts Monographien series, which presents short and illustrated biographies of celebrities." Nothing special. Written in German.

Renault, Christian: De Blanche Neige à Hercule published by Dreamland; 1997.
The first French book about the history of the Disney studios and its artists to contain information and artwork never published before (apart from the very specialized Pinocchio by Pierre Lambert). This book is a must-have for French speaking readers and a very recommended buy for the others.

Renault, Christian: Les Heroines Disney published by Dreamland; 2000.
This book about the Disney female heroes, written in French and heavily illustrated, is one of the two best books about Disney published during the year 2000. A must have for all Disney enthusiasts. Many visual documents have never been seen before.

Reynolds Bob: Roller Coasters, Flumes & Flying Saucers - The Story of Ed Morgan and Karl Bacon, Ride Inventors of the Modern Amusement Parks published by N.L. Publishing; 1999.
According to Bob Reynolds: "Ed and Karl are responsible for many of the ride systems at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. A partial list of their projects would include Dumbo, Casey Jr., Snow White, Tea Cups, Matterhorn Mountain, Pirates, Small World, Haunted Mansion, Autopia, Flying Saucers...the list goes on and on. Half of the book consists of personal interviews with Ed and Karl and remembrances of working with Walt Disney, Joe Fowler, Dick Irvine and others."

Rhode, Joe; Revenson, Jody; Eiserloh, Alex; Putvin, Jennie: Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain published by Disney Press; 2006.
Short, but excellent. Only available at the parks, unfortunately.
